Brissago's mummy: a fragment of Egyptian history in Ticino

For over a century, Brissago has guarded an extraordinary find: The mummy of the Egyptian princess Ta Sherit En Jmen, who lived about 2700 years ago in Thebes. Acquired in the 19th century by a passionate collector, it remained for many years in the attic of the town hall, representing a unique link between Ticino and ancient Egypt.

This is one of the oldest preserved mummies in Switzerland and since 2021, the mummy has been studied and restored at the HE-Arc in Neuchâtel and the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zurich. Once the restoration is complete, it will be on display at the Kulturama in Zurich, where it can be admired by the public.

A fascinating find, which continues to arouse curiosity and tell a chapter of millennial history in the heart of Brissago.
