The pond on the lakefront will remain, but the old mechanism designed for 2000 by Benno Schultess will be replaced.

It was 2003. The mayor of Brissago was Giancarlo Kuchler and the second millennium was still taking its first steps. Now the Fountain of the Millennium, located on the lakefront in the Porto Vecchio area, is about to change its face. The municipality has in fact started an operation already underway which will lead, by the summer, to the construction of a new water structure intended to replace the old game created for the 2000 celebrations.

The original work, called ‘Dialogue’, was created by the Zurich sculptor and painter Benno Schulthess on the occasion of the transition to the new millennium. It was a fountain-pond based on a water pressure system: a pump set the mechanisms in motion and fed the ball game, while also contributing to the oxygenation of the water.

“Over time, however, the structure has deteriorated – explains Reto Repetti, the municipality responsible for the territory –. In particular, the wood elements suffered from the water. A first partial refurbishment had already been carried out in 2018, with the renewal of the mechanisms and some wooden parts, but the limited duration of the intervention and the costs now too high to fully restore the system convinced us to change course: it was no longer possible to regenerate satisfactorily the movement of the sphere and its water spray”.

The choice then fell on a new solution, but consistent with the original function of the artifact. “The pond – says Giacomo Fiscalini, head of the public works service at the Technical Office – will remain essentially unchanged, while instead of the old sculptural element a sort of waterfall will be built, always designed to encourage the recycling and oxygenation of water”.

The new project was entrusted to landscape gardener Roberto Gambetta.

Work has already begun and, according to the indications provided, the new accommodation should be ready within a few weeks, then in time for the summer season.

The work on the Millennial Fountain, adds Repetti, ‘is also part of a broader discussion on the enhancement of water artefacts in the area. In parallel, the Municipality is also working on the recovery of the Incella washhouse, which will in turn be renovated and accompanied by a historical recall. The idea is to gradually start a more extensive redevelopment of fountains, basins and water points in our territory.”

From this point of view, Brissago has a remarkable heritage. The fountains surveyed in the municipality are about 120, including those of the mountains.

“Some – explains Fiscalini – date back to 1909, the year of the first aqueduct, and still retain a value that is not only historical and aesthetic, but also technical, because they act as points of purging and movement of water within the water network”.

The new fountain of the lakefront is therefore only the first piece of a larger project: preserve and update a heritage that is part of Brissago's history, without renouncing its practical and landscape function.

Reto Repetti and Giacomo Fiscalini explain the new project and how the Municipality intends to enhance the historical heritage of water The project is already underway and should be completed within one month.
